Fructooligosaccharides (FOS)

Found in many foods including onions, asparagus, and wheat, short-chain FOS is fermented by bacteria in the colon into short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). These SCFAs cause the pH of the intestinal environment to help promote increased mineral absorption including calcium and magnesium.¹

In one study, participants received 360mg of calcium and 1.24 grams of short chained FOS (the same as found in OsteoBuild Advantage™). Researchers found that FOS enhanced calcium absorption by 28% after 4 hours of ingestion.²

Calcium

According to a January 2002 study published in Hormone Metabolism Research, supplementing with divided doses of calcium (one at 9am the second at 9 pm) suppressed bone resorption during both day and night in early menopausal women.³

Vitamin D

In one study, healthy women, ages 58-67, were given Vitamin D as well as 1,000 mg calcium carbonate. After two years bone mass density of the lumbar spine increased 1.6% compared to placebo.⁴
