Onions May Hold the Key To Freer Breathing

While searching for a cure for asthma, I learned that onion extracts in particular can be very effective in the prevention of asthma attacks. An alcoholic extract made from 200 grams of onions were found to reduce bronchial spasms and airway obstruction were dramatically and in several cases totally eliminated.

Over 150 different compounds have been isolated from onions so far. It appears that certain sulfur compounds and volatile oils in the onion are responsible for its ability to prevent asthma. These components apparently inhibit the body’s formation and release of histamines, leukocytes and certain inflammatory prostaglandins, all of which trigger an asthma attack.

I have come up with a simple recipe so that you can make your own homemade anti-asthma onion extract.

Recipe for "Anti-Asthma Onion Extract"

To make your own onion extract, all you need is three or four large yellow or white onions (the red variety is less potent), a quart-sized wide-mouth canning or mayonnaise jar with a good lid, a blender and some 190 proof (95% absolute alcohol) grain alcohol (ethyl alcohol).

(In most areas of the country, 190 proof grain alcohol is sold under the names Everclear or Clear Spring. If it isn’t available in your area, you can use 100 proof vodka. However, since it is only 50% alcohol, the extraction process may take a little longer and the daily dosage may need to be slightly increased to achieve the same effects.)

First, remove and discard the outer dry skin of the onions and then drop the onions into the blender. Blend them on low, slowly adding drops of alcohol until the mixture becomes a mush about the consistency of thin pancake batter. Pour the mush into the quart jar, and then add enough alcohol to cover the mush by roughly two inches. (Again this is a very crude extract, but it works well even with considerable variations in the end product.)

Place a lid on the jar, store it in the refrigerator, and shake it vigorously twice daily for two weeks. At the end of two weeks, strain the liquid through cloth and squeeze or press any remaining liquid into the jar (you can discard the leftover onion mush). The extract is now ready for use.
