Injury, repetitive pounding from running or other athletic activities, obesity, and standing for prolonged periods of time, particularly on hard surfaces, can stress and strain the plantar fascia and cause plantar fasciitis. But so can more subtle things, such as having a very short plantar fascia (an unusually high arch) or a very long one (flat feet) and wearing shoes that don’t support the arch.
