What Causes Gallstones?

Inspections at autopsy have shown that as many as 20 percent of women over age 40 have gallstones, and 8 percent of men. And increasing age continues to up your risk of developing gallstones. Other relatively well-known risk factors for gallstones include:

  • Obesity
  • Diabetes
  • A diet high in fat and/or low in fiber
  • Pregnancy
  • Use of birth control medications
