Unfortunately, as we age, Bifidobacteria, the most common bacteria in your large intestine, and Lactobacillus, the most prevalent bacteria in your small intestine, begin to decline more rapidly. And at the same time, increased levels of non-beneficial micro-organisms may increase.

That’s why I developed Probiotic Advantage® Bifido Beadlet 50+. It contains a very specific blend of Bifidobaceria and Lactobacillus bacteria with over 65% being comprised of Bifidobacteria. I carefully selected the highly beneficial strains in Probiotic Advantage Bifido Beadlet 50+ after digging through mounds of research and testing them myself. Each of the numbered strains you get comes from the leading producers around the world—from Japan to Denmark to the United States. I’m confident it’s the best combination of high-quality probiotic strains for people age 50+ to keep your entire digestive system running smoothly!

Even better, this probiotic comes in a tiny, easy-to-swallow “beadlet” you take just once a day. Its Advanced Bead-Lock Technologyguarantees to provide at least 2 billion LIVE bacteria for all-day digestive comfort.

Here’s how it works

The 2 billion live bacteria in Probiotic Advantage Bifido Beadlet 50+ are surrounded by a protective layer of natural vegetable oil encapsulating them. This also helps ensure the live bacteria aren’t killed off by exposure to light, heat, or oxygen before you even take them. The outer coating of the beadlet is a seamless, virtually impenetrable, acid-resistant shell made of two natural, food-grade materials: gelatin and pectin. Only when it reaches your lower intestine does the beadlet break apart and release the live bacteria into your digestive system. It releases these bacteria slowly over 12 hours or longer, so you enjoy all-day comfort.

Bifido strains support the health of  your gut and colon

Probiotic Advantage Bifido Beadlet 50+ gives you 3 different numbered strains of Bifidobacterium—the most prevalent good bacteria in your large intestine. Numbered bacteria strains are important, since they can help identify the specific strains which have been clinically researched on humans.

Billions of Bifidobacterium line the walls of your large intestine and help balance the digestive flora for comprehensive colon coverage. In addition, these bacteria produce lactic acid, which keeps the pH of the large intestine acidic to discourage the growth of non-beneficial bacteria and ensure a balanced digestive tract.

  • B. longum BB-536: This powerhouse is able to help break down carbohydrates to help avoid excess gas and bloating after eating.

One controlled study on B. longum BB-536 showed it made older adults more “regular.” Another clinical study on this specific strain found it supported immune function in older adults for a full 20 weeks after they stopped taking it.

  • B. lactis Bl-04: This hardy “good” guy is highly resistant to acid and bile. Researchers have found it helps promote gut health.  And multiple studies suggest that taking B. lactis may help support immune health.
  • B. infantis M-63: This Bifidobacterium is the most dominant beneficial bacteria found in breast-fed infants. Research suggests supplementation with this special, clinically researched strain may help decrease discomfort, bloating, and constipation.

Lactobacillus strains thrive in your small intestine

Probiotic Advantage Bifido Beadlet 50+ gives you 3 more clinically researched probiotic strains from the Lactobacillus family. These crucial bacteria reside in your small intestine. They’re responsible for producing lactase, the enzyme you need to break down lactose—the sugar found in milk and dairy products.  Plus, research shows they help alleviate occasional diarrhea.

  • L. acidophilus NCFM®: Published articles in peer-reviewed journals confirm this special Lactobacillus strain supports digestive health and immune function. Because these “good” bacteria are extremely resistant to acid and bile, they’re able to adhere to the lining of your small intestine. By doing so, they help promote proper flora balance for healthy digestion and immune health.
  • L. plantarum Lp-115: This good guy occurs naturally in fermented, plant-based foods like sauerkraut, kimchi, pickles, brined olives, and sourdough bread. It’s known for its ability to inhibit non-beneficial bacteria. And like all the other numbered strains in this formula, it’s been clinically researched to be highly resistant to stomach acid and bile.
  • L. rhamnosus Lr-32: This probiotic strain is considered one of the best strains for promoting vaginal health. Plus, it can cut your risk of traveler’s diarrhea significantly. A review of probiotic research on residents of York City found those who took L. rhamnosus before traveling to developing countries had a 3.9% rate of diarrhea. That’s compared to 7.4% for those who didn’t take the probiotic.

This advanced beadlet is also incredibly convenient. It takes just a few seconds to pop one in the morning, and you’re good-to-go all day! Plus these tiny, easy-to-swallow beadlets come in a stay-fresh, portable blister pack and easy-to-open pouch so they’re ideal for travel or your busy lifestyle.  And there’s no need to worry about refrigeration.

GUT CHECK: If you're 50+, why is it essential to choose a probiotic with higher levels of Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteria?

We go through many inevitable changes as we get older—and one of them is the balance of bacteria in the gut which can affect your overall health. Any or all of the following can affect your digestion.

  • Are you taking any medications? The composition of gut bacteria can change when you take medications. And most people already know that antibiotics can reduce the concentration of good bacteria, upsetting the intestinal balance.
  • Have you noticed problems with dairy? Many older adults develop low intestinal lactase activity, limiting the ability to digest lactose. This can lead to uncomfortable symptoms such as gas, diarrhea, bloating, and cramping.
  • Are you experiencing more stress? Stress can influence many bodily functions, including bacterial changes in the gut.

Science and Quality

B. longum BB-536

  • In a controlled crossover trial, 18 seniors who supplemented with BB-536 in cultured milk saw an increase in the frequency and regularity of stools.1
  • In a placebo-controlled crossover trial BB-536 showed a significant increase in defecation frequency and improvement in fecal characteristics.2
  • Elderly patients administered B. longum showed it helped support immune function for 20 weeks after discontinuing supplementation.3

B. lactis BI-04

  • In vitro studies have shown Bl-04 to be resistant to low pH conditions and survive the presence of bile at concentrations present in the duodenum. The ability to tolerate the highly acidic conditions in the stomach and concentrations of bile salts found in the small intestine are important for survival in the GI tract.
  • Bl-04 produces L(+)-lactic acid. Lactic acid is an important metabolic end product of the fermentation process. Lactic acid has two optical isomers: L(+)-lactic acid and D(-)-lactic acid. L(+)-lactic acid is important for the generation of energy under anaerobic conditions.

B. infantis M-63

  • Supplementation with B. infantis decreased discomfort, bloating, and bowel movement difficulty.4

L. acidophilus NCFM®

  • In a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, patients taking L. acidophilus experienced significantly more relief from their gastrointestinal discomfort than did those taking placebo.5
  • Supplementation with probiotics including L. acidophilus and B. Bifidum help modulate the response of the intestinal microflora to the effects of antibiotics.6
  • A meta-analysis of double-blind human trials found that probiotic strains, including L. acidophilus, help to alleviate occasional diarrhea.7

L. plantarum Lp-115

  • Research found that supplementation with L. plantarum supports immune function in healthy adults. 8

L. rhamnosus Lr-32

  • A review of probiotic research states that Americans travelling from New York City to developing countries and taking L. rhamnosus had a 3.9% rate of diarrhea, compared to 7.4% for those not taking the probiotic.9
  • A review of probiotic research concluded that L. rhamnosus may help support vaginal and urinary health.10
