What Causes Celiac Disease?
Discover the genetic link to celiac disease and gluten sensitivity
If you've been experiencing any of the symptoms of celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, it is very important to be familiar with your family's medical history. That's because there is a strong genetic component to celiac disease.
In the United States, celiac disease affects one in every 133 individuals. Celiac disease is far more common, however, among those with relatives having the disease. It is associated with a 95 percent genetic predisposition. If one of your second-degree relatives (aunt, uncle, grandparent) has celiac disease, you have a 1 in 39 chance of also having the problem. If one of your first-degree relatives (mother, father, sister, brother) has celiac disease, your risk increases to a 1 in 22 chance.
So if you are suffering from the symptoms of celiac disease or gluten sensitivity, it is critical to document a family health history for proper diagnosis.
