What Causes Back Pain?
Learn about the two most commonly overlooked causes of back problems
There are many, many causes of back pain. Commonly, low back pain is caused by overuse, strain, injury, aging, and chronic conditions like arthritis or osteoporosis. However, in my experience, I've found that there are two other major—and often overlooked—causes of low back pain:
Over-Acidity in the Body
One of the biggest causes of back pain is over-acidity in the body.
Research conducted in Germany has suggested that many cases of chronic low back pain are a result of too much acid. The study involved 82 patients who had back pain for over three months without any spine involvement. For four weeks, they were given a lactose-based alkaline mineral supplement called Basica (this is not available in the United States). At the end of four weeks, the pain rating in 76 of the 82 individuals dropped an average of 49 percent. Not surprisingly, there was a corresponding increase in alkalinity of their blood and other body tissues.
If you're suffering from chronic back pain, there's a good chance you are too acidic. In the absence of Basica supplements here in the United States, try to increase your consumption of high-alkaline foods such as most vegetables, beans, peas, nuts, sprouted alfalfa, radish and chia seeds, plain yogurt, herbal teas, garlic, and most vegetable and fruit juices. But remember, just because a food is acid-forming doesn't make it unhealthy, and I'm not saying that you should avoid all acidic foods. In fact, many acidic foods are necessary for optimum health. It’s just a matter of balance.
Poor Sleeping Position
Stomach sleeping can lead to a lot of back problems. To prevent back problems you should sleep on either your side or your back.
If you sleep on your side, your knees can be bent—but you should keep them together and not draw one leg up close to your chest. If you have to sleep with one arm under the pillow, then make sure it is fully extended or straightened out, not bent at the elbow and tied in a knot under the pillow. If you sleep on your back, don't sleep with your arms above your head, but rather at your sides or on your stomach or chest.
Reducing your acidic load and changing the way your sleep are two causes of back pain that, if fixed, can easily alleviate a host of back problems. But if you still find you have a lot of pain, even after trying these two solutions, then there are several natural back pain treatments that work wonders.
